Choosing your Katla ice cave and glacier tour

no toilets at the glacier edge, go in vík

Every Katla ice cave and glacier tour runs the same way at its core: a Super Jeep carries you across the black sand to Kötlujökull, guides fit your crampons and helmet, and you walk onto the ice and into the cave. The real choice is time. A departure from Vík takes about three hours; a day trip from Reykjavík runs ten to twelve hours and adds the waterfalls.

Before you book
  • GuidesYou cannot visit Katla Ice Cave on your own; access is by guided tour only, with crampons and helmets provided.
  • BootsWear sturdy hiking boots with a stiff sole and ankle support so the crampons strap on properly; soft shoes do not work.
  • ClothingBring warm layers, a waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves and a hat, because meltwater drips inside the cave.
  • Meeting timeVík departures meet at the Vík Inn, and arriving twenty minutes before departure leaves time to park and check in.
  • BookingReserve a few days ahead in summer and earlier still during the July peak, when departure slots fill first.
  • TimingExpect roughly 45 to 60 minutes in the cave area plus a short glacier walk, with 30 to 45 minutes of jeep ride each way.
  • WeatherHigh winds, heavy rain or closed roads can cancel or alter a tour; if the operator cancels for safety, you can reschedule or get a full refund.
  • FacilitiesThere are no toilets at the glacier edge, so use the ones in Vík before you leave.
  • AgesMinimum ages on Katla tours range from six to eight depending on the operator, and everyone needs to walk on uneven ground.

What you'll see on the Katla ice cave and glacier trip

ash from old eruptions stripes the ice

5 stopsabout 2 h12 places

Blue ice striped with black volcanic ash is the first thing you stand in front of. The Katla Ice Cave sits on Kötlujökull, an outlet of Mýrdalsjökull, and ash from past eruptions of the Katla volcano runs through it in dark bands.

Your guide gives a safety briefing here, then fits you with crampons and a helmet before you step onto the glacier.

The day runs through volcanic plains and glacier edge and back again. A Super Jeep carries you off-road across black sand toward the ice, you walk a short stretch of glacier to reach the cave, and you spend about an hour inside before the ride back to Vík.

How to book your Katla ice cave and glacier trip

5 steps from here to the day
2 pro tips4 heads-ups

meet inside the vík inn lobby, 20 min early

1. Pick your date and departure

Choose a day on your South Coast route, then pick a start time. From Vík, departures run from 8:30 am through the afternoon, and cancellation up to 24 hours ahead brings a full refund.

Pro tipBook the earliest morning slot or the final afternoon one, when fewer super jeep convoys overlap at the glacier edge
RecommendedIn summer, lock in your date at least a few days ahead, and earlier for July
2. Choose the right option

Compare the 3-hour tours that meet in Vík with the 4-hour extended version that adds a longer hike around the glacier, or the 12-hour option with Reykjavík pickup and waterfall stops.

Common mistakeBooking the Reykjavík day trip when you are already staying in Vík and could join a short local departure instead
RecommendedWant more time on the ice? The extended 4-hour tour gives extra glacier time beyond the standard 3-hour format
3. Confirm and check your inbox

After payment, the confirmation and the operator's messages arrive by email. Read them for your exact meeting point and start time, since these vary between the Katla tours.

Pro tipChange your pickup point in your booking at least two hours before departure if your plans shift
4. Find the meeting point in Vík

One tour meets in the lobby of the Vík Inn on Víkurbraut; another gathers in the bus parking lot behind the Icewear building, facing the sea. If you drive, arrive 20 minutes early to park and check in.

Common mistakeCutting parking too fine, the lot fills with tour buses and cars around departure times
RecommendedGrab coffee or groceries in Vík first, there are no facilities at the glacier edge
5. Show up ready on the day

Wear waterproof hiking boots and warm layers, bring rain gear and gloves, and meet your guide at the stated time. Crampons and helmets are fitted at the glacier, so no technical gear to carry.

ImportantChildren under 8 cannot join some of these tours, check the age limit for the one you book
Common mistakeTurning up in sneakers or jeans, wet cotton gets cold and heavy once the meltwater starts dripping

What to know before you book a Katla glacier tour from Vík

first or last departure dodges the biggest crowds

01
ChoosingWhat it is, who it suits, when to go
3
The ride

A Super Jeep carries you about 45 minutes across the black sand and old lava of the Mýrdalssandur outwash plain. The track is rough and jolting, and the ride depends partly on the guide's driving style. Regular cars cannot make this trip.

Time inside

On a 3-hour tour from Vík, expect roughly 45 to 60 minutes in and around the ice cave, with the rest taken up by the jeep transfer, gearing up and the walk. A separate glacier hike gives you two to three hours on the ice, so book that if you want far more time on foot.

Group size

You can choose a small-group departure or a standard one. Smaller groups make the glacier feel more relaxed and leave more room at the stops. Safety procedures cap how many people each guide takes onto the ice, so group size is a safety matter too.

02
BookingHow far ahead, and what happens if plans change
1
Cancellation

All six tours let you cancel up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund. If the operator calls off the trip for weather, road closures or unsafe glacier conditions, you can reschedule or get your money back. Leave yourself that buffer when you book around a fixed travel plan.

03
Before you goPapers, health, what to bring
4
Motion sickness

The off-road section is bumpy enough that one tour lists motion sickness as a reason to sit it out. If you are prone to it, bring your usual remedy and keep your eyes on the horizon. Some travelers find the jolting tiring rather than uncomfortable.

Included

Every Katla tour on this page supplies the essentials, and the short list looks like this: Food, drinks and weather-appropriate clothing are not included, so pack your own.

  • Expert glacier guide
  • Super Jeep transport to and from the glacier
  • Helmet and glacier crampons
  • Ice cave safety equipment
Boots

Crampons strap onto sturdy hiking boots with a stiff sole and ankle support. Soft shoes and sneakers will not hold them securely, so ordinary trainers will not work. Bring proper boots or rent a pair before you set out.

Clothing

Wear a warm base layer and an insulating midlayer under a waterproof jacket and trousers, because meltwater drips steadily inside the cave. Add gloves, a warm hat and spare dry socks, since puddles on the approach can soak your footwear.

04
On the dayWhere to be, when, and how you get there
3
Meeting point

Tours from Vík meet in the town itself, either in the lobby of The Vík Inn on Víkurbraut or in the bus parking lot behind the Icewear building at Austurvegur 20, facing the sea. Your confirmation names the exact spot. Self-drivers should arrive about 20 minutes before departure to park and check in.

Reykjavík pickup

The full-day tours collect you from Reykjavík and drop you back at the end of a 10 to 12-hour day. Pickup starts at the time on your voucher and the vehicle can take up to 30 minutes to arrive, so be waiting outside from the start of the window.

Facilities

There are no toilets at the glacier edge or inside the cave. Use the facilities in Vík before your departure, and factor that into the 20 minutes you leave for parking and check-in.

A glacier tour into Katla Ice Cave, from Vík

no toilets at the glacier edge

One booking puts you on the ice of Mýrdalsjökull and inside Katla Ice Cave, black ash frozen in blue ice. The trade-off is time on the glacier itself, and the right departure depends on where your day starts.

Katla Ice Cave or glacier hike - which trade suits you?

If you only remember three things
  1. 1

A combined Katla tour gives you 45 to 60 minutes in the cave area plus a short glacier walk; a dedicated glacier hike gives 1.5 to 3 hours on the ice.

  2. 2

From Vík the whole thing takes about 3 hours; from Reykjavík count on a full 8 to 12 hour day.

  3. 3

Wear stiff, ankle-covering hiking boots, crampons strap onto them, and soft sneakers can get you refused at the gear check.

Katla Ice Cave or glacier hike - which trade suits you?

The decision is really about how long you want your boots on the ice. A combined Katla tour out of Vík puts you in the ice-cave area for about 45 to 60 minutes and adds a short walk on the glacier around it.

A dedicated glacier hike does the opposite: 1.5 to 3 hours moving slowly across the surface, no cave.

Cost cuts the other way. A Katla day from Reykjavík runs dearer than a glacier-hike day, and it gives you a darker cave but less time on the ice. People who prioritize value tend to pick the hike; people who want to stand inside a glacier pick Katla.

What people get wrong about the combined tour
MythA combined cave-and-glacier tour means hours of ice walking
Reality

A combined Katla tour gives about 45 to 60 minutes in the cave area with a short glacier walk; a dedicated hike delivers 1.5 to 3 hours on the ice

MythThe cave visit is the workout
Reality

It is mostly a walk and a look, no climbing or rope work; the hike is the athletic one

MythBoth options cover the same ground
Reality

They don't: the cave tour goes into the glacier, the hike crosses its surface

So ask yourself one question: inside the glacier, or across it? The answer picks your tour.

Inside Kötlujökull - black ash bands in blue glacier ice

Step through the mouth of the cave and the light changes first. The ice here glows blue-white, then a band of black cuts across it, then grey, then blue again. These are ash layers from Katla's eruptions, mixed into the glacier as the volcano above buried it, eruption after eruption.

Travelers who have seen both say it is what sets Katla apart: the caves on Vatnajökull near Jökulsárlón shine in dense, luminous blue, while Katla looks like a slice through Iceland's volcanic history.

The natural light helps too. Katla's brighter interior makes it easier to move around and photograph, where the Crystal Ice Cave can mean queuing for your turn at the wall.

One honest caveat: this is a living glacier. Meltwater and ice movement shift walls and ceilings, open new passages and close old ones, so the cave you see may differ from the photo you booked from. Guides choose safe, beautiful spots fresh on the day.

A traveler's note
Loved this tour! Driver Wendy shared loads about Icelandic life and wildlife. The bumpy Super Jeep ride over the frozen landscape was so fun, and the cave plus waterfall stops were stunning.

How hard is the Katla glacier walk, honestly?

Easier than it sounds, harder than the brochure admits. The walk from where the super jeep parks to the cave mouth runs about 1 to 2 km over uneven ground with little elevation gain.

Recent visitors split on the feel of it: some call it an easy climb that still takes stamina, others found it steep and awkward in crampons. The truth is it varies with the route and the weather that day.

No climbing, no scrambling, no rope work. Most people of average fitness manage it fine, and the tours describe the walk as roughly 20 minutes on a sandy path and 10 on the glacier.

Who should think twice: tours set minimum ages from 6 to 8, some exclude children under 8 outright, and several say plainly they don't suit people with limited mobility, heart problems or wheelchair users.

One operator doesn't recommend its tour for pregnant travelers because the jeep ride bumps hard. If bad knees or ankles limit your walking, that uneven approach is the part to weigh.

Best time for a Katla glacier and ice cave trip

Katla runs year-round, and that alone separates it from most Icelandic caves. The Vatnajökull caves near Jökulsárlón flood or become unstable once summer melt sets in, and most natural caves across the country close between spring and autumn.

Katla sits high on Kötlujökull, where sudden flooding is less likely, and the ash layers on the glacier insulate the ice and slow the melt.

That doesn't make every month equal. Winter brings wind: January and February average 12 to 13 windy days a month, so cancellations cluster there.

Summer is calmer and busier, and departure slots sell out days ahead, further ahead in July. For light inside the cave, travelers point to the earliest morning departure; for thinner crowds, the first slot or the last afternoon one.

Vík departure or Reykjavík glacier day trip?

Two formats, two very different days. Meeting in Vík keeps it tight: 2.5 to 3 hours door to door, with a 30 to 45 minute super jeep crossing, gearing up, the walk and the cave. You drive yourself to Vík first, then the glacier is the whole outing.

From Reykjavík it becomes a full-day expedition, 8 to 12 hours, dominated by the 187 km run down Route 1 each way, with Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss folded in around the ice. The 12-hour Reykjavík Katla tour adds pickup, drop-off and those waterfall stops along the coast.

If you're road-tripping the South Coast, the Vík departures fit a half-day neatly. If you're based in the capital without a car, the day trip is the only realistic shape. One warning: the public bus reaches Vík at 5 pm, after the last cave departure, so the bus-plus-tour combination doesn't work in a day.

Driving to Vík for the glacier, and the road that stops there

Reykjavík to Vík is 187 km, about 2 hours 40 minutes each way in good conditions, and the drive itself asks for respect. Hellisheiði, the pass between Reykjavík and Selfoss, ices over often. The exposed stretch under Eyjafjallajökull regularly catches gusts above 25 m/s, and the coast around Vík is known for sudden violent squalls.

A normal car carries you to Vík even in winter, since by law 4WD is only required on the highland F-roads. Wind is the hazard on this coast, whatever you drive.

Before you set out, check three things: umferdin.is for road conditions and webcams, the Icelandic Met Office for the forecast, and SafeTravel for alerts. Storms close Route 1 for a few hours at a time, occasionally a whole day; in December 2022 blizzards shut south coast roads for days.

Then the hard stop: no rental car reaches the glacier. The rough glacial tracks to the Katla trailhead defeat ordinary SUVs, and the super jeeps that run them belong to the tours. Drive to Vík, hand over the last 45 minutes.

Meeting your glacier tour in Vík, and when to arrive

Vík is small, and the meeting points sit within a few steps of each other. One operator stages from the lobby of The Vík Inn on Víkurbraut; others gather in the bus parking lot behind the Icewear building on Austurvegur, facing the sea, where the super jeeps line up.

The number that matters is 20 minutes. Arrive at the meeting point that early to park, find your guide and check in, and if you're driving in from the west, add time for the wind that often funnels through town. In high season the lot fills.

One small note from travelers who've done it: at the bigger glacier lagoon meetings farther east, some tours run through partner companies, so the vehicle's branding may not match your booking.

That's not automatically a problem, just worth a question to the driver holding the manifest. In Vík the scale is friendlier; look for the high-clearance jeeps and the guide in glacier gear by them.

What to wear on the Katla glacier, and the boot rule

Inside the cave it hovers around freezing year-round, and meltwater drips from the roof whatever the season. So the kit is simple and non-negotiable: warm layers under a waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, a warm hat, and boots that can get soaked without ruining your day. Skip jeans, they go cold and heavy when wet.

The boots carry the real rule. Crampons strap onto them for the glacier walk, which means a stiff sole and ankle coverage; ordinary soft sneakers can get you checked and refused at the gear check.

If your own shoes are too flexible, suitable hiking boots with reinforced ankle support can be rented at the glacier tour location.

Clothing to stay warm and dry in Katla Ice Cave
  • Moisture-managing base layerHelps keep you comfortable under warmer layers in the cold, damp cave.
  • Warm insulating midlayerAdds warmth while you walk and stand inside the cave.
  • Waterproof jacket and trousersProtects your layers from dripping meltwater and wet outdoor conditions.
  • Sturdy waterproof hiking bootsThe approach can be wet and uneven, and meltwater can soak shoes.
  • Gloves and warm hatKeep warm outdoors and in the cold cave; choose a hat that fits under a helmet.
  • Spare dry socksUseful if meltwater or puddles leave your socks wet.

Pack the day bag around that list. A helmet and crampons come from the operator, so your job is warmth and dry feet. Spare dry socks are the detail experienced hands swear by.

The Katla day itself, hour by hour

Three hours from Vík, and the ice takes only a slice of them. Check-in, then the super jeep leaves the pavement for Mýrdalssandur, about 40 minutes across black sand, old lava and shallow streams.

The ride is part of the scenery and part of the ordeal: it jolts hard, and travelers prone to motion sickness bring a remedy and watch the horizon.

At the glacier edge your guide fits crampons and a helmet, then the 1 to 2 km walk to the cave mouth.

Inside the cave itself, count on about 30 minutes among the ash bands, up to an hour if you photograph everything; the wider 45 to 60 minutes some itineraries quote for the ice-cave area includes gearing up and time on the ice around the entrance.

Two practical details before you go: there are no toilets at the glacier edge or along the track, so use the ones in Vík first. And if you're carrying a camera, slip it into a bag before you move from the cold glacier into the warmer cave, or the lens fogs on the first step.

Guides, gear and why the glacier is guided-only

You cannot walk onto Kötlujökull on your own, and after you know what's under the snow you wouldn't want to. Crevasses and moulins riddle the low reaches of the glacier, meltwater enlarges them as the surface changes, and a snow bridge can hold until it doesn't.

Sudden floods near the glacier margin come with little warning. Icelandic law and plain sense agree: a licensed glacier guide is required to visit a natural ice cave safely and legally.

The tours cover the rest. Certified guides lead every departure, and crampons, helmets and ice-cave equipment are included, fitted at the glacier edge.

Guides also read the ice daily: water, loose material, broken ice or ceiling cracks send the group elsewhere that day, and they know the photo spots and the glacier's history from years of working it.

What nobody tells you

Guides choose the safe cave spot fresh each day

The cave shifts with weather and ice movement, so the entrance you see may not be the one in the photos

Daily structural checks decide access

A cave showing water, cracks or broken ice is skipped that day

Game of Thrones filmed on this very glacier

Mýrdalsjökull doubled for scenes beyond the Wall, a detail guides enjoy telling

That daily judgment is the quiet reason these trips have a good safety record.

Some days the glacier wins, and the system around it works in your favor. Extreme winds above 20 m/s can cancel Katla tours. Heavy rain can flood the cave or make the tracks unsafe, and orange warnings with sustained winds of 18 to 35 m/s can close Route 1 outright.

Tours are also suspended if seismic activity or sub-glacial flooding looks likely, and an operator may alter the day if the melt shortens the ice walk.

When the operator cancels for weather, road closure or glacier conditions, you get a full refund or a free reschedule; the tours' own terms say so plainly. The same applies if the route closes mid-tour and the day is called off.

If you're driving and spot a closure on the morning of your tour, call the operator as soon as you see it, before departure time.

Drive 16 minutes west and you reach Reynisfjara black sand beach; 23 minutes gets you the Dyrhólaey lighthouse. Read the beach's traffic-light system before you walk to the water: when the yellow light shows, stay out of the yellow zone; at red, keep to the upper beach and the designated viewing area.

Sneaker waves here have killed people who turned their backs on the sea, so face the water and keep children close.

Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss sit within a short drive west of Vík if you'd rather chase waterfalls than cliffs. Either way, a 3-hour glacier tour leaves most of the day standing.

Inside the glacier, on your terms

Book the combined Katla tour if standing inside a glacier, ash bands and all, tops crossing open ice for hours. Book a plain glacier hike if time on the ice is the point.

Either way, go from Vík if you have a car, from Reykjavík if you don't, and pack for water dripping from the roof.

FAQs - the Katla ice cave and glacier trip from Vík

no toilets at the glacier edge

Quick answers to what people ask before booking a Katla glacier hike and ice cave tour.

VikVik2026
Standing inside Katla tonight, black ash bands frozen through blue ice above your head. Book the earliest slot, and pack spare socks.
How long does a Katla ice cave and glacier tour from Vík take?

Count on about 3 hours from departure to return in Vík. The Super Jeep ride across the volcanic sands takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour each way, and you spend 20 to 60 minutes hiking and exploring inside the cave.

How much time do you actually spend on the glacier ice?

On a combined tour, expect about 45 to 60 minutes in the ice-cave area plus a short walk across the glacier. A dedicated glacier hike gives you one and a half to three hours on the ice, so pick that if more time on foot matters most.

Can you drive to Katla Ice Cave in your own rental car?

No. Reaching the trailheads on Kötlujökull requires a specialized Super Jeep, and the cave itself can only be entered with a certified glacier guide. Every tour from Vík includes both the vehicle and the guide.

Is crampons and helmet gear included on the tour?

Yes. The Katla tours include ice-cave equipment such as crampons and helmets, and a certified glacier guide leads the way and fits your gear before you step onto the ice.

What kind of hiking boots do you need for the glacier walk?

Wear sturdy hiking boots with a stiff sole and good ankle support, since crampons strap onto the boots and soft shoes do not hold them well. Suitable boots can be rented at the glacier tour location if yours fall short.

How fit do you need to be for the Mýrdalsjökull glacier hike?

You need to walk independently over uneven terrain, ice and gentle inclines in crampons. Most people with average fitness manage it, though the ground is rugged and some tours are not suitable for anyone with limited mobility.

What is the minimum age for a Katla glacier and ice cave tour?

Most tours set the minimum age at 8, though some from Vík take children from 6. Check the age limit on the specific tour before you book if you are bringing young children.

What should you wear for the cave and the glacier walk?

Dress in a warm base layer and insulating midlayer under a waterproof jacket and trousers, with waterproof hiking boots, gloves and a warm hat. Bring spare dry socks, because meltwater and puddles inside the cave can soak your footwear.

Why is Katla's ice black and blue instead of pure blue?

Ash from Katla's eruptions, including the big one in 1918, lies in bands through the glacier, so the ice mixes dark volcanic layers with translucent blue pockets. Travelers say it photographs well in the cave's brighter natural light.

Should you book the tour from Vík or as a day trip from Reykjavík?

From Vík, the tour takes about 3 hours and suits road-trippers well. From Reykjavík, the full day trip runs 10 to 12 hours with pickup and South Coast stops at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, since the drive alone is about 2 hours 40 minutes each way.

Are there toilets at the glacier before the tour starts?

No. There are no facilities at the Kötlujökull glacier edge or inside the cave, so use the toilets in Vík before your Super Jeep departs.
